Part 1

  1. Go to https://www2.ncdps.gov/Index2.cfm?a=000003%2C000014%2C002745 and look at the five most recent collision reports from Orange County.
  2. Create a spreadsheet where each row is a collision. Convert the fields in the paper document into columns in the spreadsheet. In Row 1, create column names. In rows 2-6, fill in the information from the forms.
  3. Use your existing knowledge of Excel to analyze the spreadsheet you created, and write one simple sentence that describes a newsworthy finding from your analysis. Write this sentence in Cell A1 of a new tab in the Excel file.
  4. Upload the Excel file to Sakai. Name is “collisions-[your last name]”

Part 2

  1. Go to https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/releases/Search/casualty/ and look at the five most recent Casualty Releases.
  2. Create a spreadsheet where each row is one person. Design the spreadsheet so that a web developer could use it to create the data visualizations on this page: https://apps.washingtonpost.com/national/fallen/
  3. In Row 1, create column names. In rows 2-6, fill in the information pulled from the five most recent news releases.
  4. Upload the Excel file to Sakai. Name it “casualties-[your last name]
